Notion MCP: How to Connect Notion to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor
Notion MCP is Notion’s own hosted MCP server, at https://mcp.notion.com/mcp. You add that URL to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Claude Code, sign in to Notion once, and your AI can search your workspace, read pages, and create or update pages and databases. There’s nothing to install and no API token to paste. It sees only what you can already see in Notion.
If your work already lives in Notion, connect it and you’re done. If you mostly want somewhere your AIs can save and find notes between chats, a plain Markdown vault may be the simpler fit. Both are covered below.
What is the Notion MCP server?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the standard Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other AI apps use to work with outside tools. A server exposes actions like “search” or “create page”, and your AI decides when to call them. If the term is new, what is MCP explains it in plain words.
Notion runs its MCP server for you. Per Notion’s developer docs, the main tools include:
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
notion-search |
Searches your workspace (and connected apps on some plans) |
notion-query-data-sources |
Reads rows from your databases and saved views |
notion-create-pages |
Creates new pages |
notion-update-page |
Edits an existing page |
notion-create-comment |
Leaves a comment on a page |
notion-create-file-upload |
Uploads a file |
Before Notion hosted its own server, people ran community servers on their computers with an integration token. Notion now points to the hosted server as the default, and you don’t need to share each page with an integration first.
How do you connect Notion MCP to Claude?
In Claude.ai or the Claude desktop app:
- Open Settings, then Connectors.
- If Notion is in the connector list, pick it. If not, add a custom connector with the URL
https://mcp.notion.com/mcp. - Sign in to Notion and allow access.
- In a new chat, try: “Search my Notion for the Q4 content plan and summarise it.”
In Claude Code, run:
claude mcp add --transport http notion https://mcp.notion.com/mcp
Then type /mcp inside Claude Code and finish the sign-in.
How do you connect Notion MCP to ChatGPT and Cursor?
ChatGPT: open Settings, find connectors (or apps), and add Notion. If it isn’t listed for your account, add a custom connector with the same URL and sign in. ChatGPT’s connector settings move around between plans and versions, so check OpenAI’s help pages if you can’t find the option.
Cursor: add a notion entry to .cursor/mcp.json in your project (or ~/.cursor/mcp.json for every project) pointing at https://mcp.notion.com/mcp, then turn Notion on in Cursor’s MCP settings and sign in.
Every app ends the same way: a Notion sign-in screen. Nothing is shared until you allow it.
What are the limits of Notion MCP?
Notion’s docs list a few that matter in practice:
- Your permissions apply. The AI sees only what your Notion account sees. Guests can’t connect Notion MCP; only workspace members can.
- Some features depend on your plan. AI-powered search across connected apps needs a Business or Enterprise plan with Notion AI. On other plans, search falls back to keyword search, and some search filters are dropped.
- Database queries vary by plan. Saved views work everywhere; heavier queries are limited outside Business and Enterprise.
- Admins can restrict clients. Workspace owners can see and manage connected AI apps in Notion’s settings.
None of that stops you from using it on a personal workspace. It’s worth knowing when results look thinner than you expected.
When is Notion MCP the right choice?
Notion MCP is the better pick when:
- Your team already runs on Notion: wikis, databases, project boards.
- You want the AI to update existing pages and database rows where everyone already works.
- You need databases with views, properties and relations, not just text notes.
A separate Markdown vault fits better when:
- You want a memory your AIs fill themselves. “Save what we decided” should become a note, linked to related notes, without you choosing a page or a database first.
- You want plain files. Markdown with
[[links]]opens in any editor and exports cleanly. Markdown for beginners covers the format. - You run several brands or clients and want each in its own space. One vault per brand shows why, and managing multiple brands with AI covers the wider workflow.
Many people use both: Notion for team docs and planning, a vault for what their AIs need to remember. For the bigger picture of what a notes tool for AI should do, see best note taking app for AI. If you’re torn between Notion and a file-based tool, Notion vs Obsidian for content creators compares the two directly.
Notion MCP vs a notes vault like Valta
| Notion MCP | Valta | |
|---|---|---|
| What it connects | Your Notion workspace | A vault of Markdown notes |
| Works with | Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Claude Code and other MCP apps | Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code, Claude Code and other MCP apps |
| Sign-in | OAuth with Notion | OAuth in Claude.ai and ChatGPT, an API key in editors |
| Structure | Pages and databases | Notes with frontmatter, tags and [[links]], shown as a graph |
| Separate spaces | Workspaces and page permissions | Up to 5 vaults on Pro, each with its own connector URL |

FAQ
Is Notion MCP free?
Connecting it doesn’t need a paid Notion plan. Some features, like AI search across connected apps and higher request limits, depend on Business or Enterprise. Check Notion’s docs for your plan.
Do I need to install anything for Notion MCP?
No. The hosted server runs at Notion. You add the URL to your AI app and sign in. The older open-source server you run yourself still exists, but Notion recommends the hosted one.
Can ChatGPT edit my Notion pages?
Yes, once connected. The server includes tools to create and update pages. ChatGPT may ask you to confirm before it writes.
Can Claude and ChatGPT share memory through Notion?
They can both read and write the same Notion pages, so yes in practice. You decide where things go. For a setup built for that job, see how to share memory between Claude and ChatGPT.
Is Notion MCP safe?
It uses OAuth and your existing Notion permissions, so the AI can’t see pages you can’t see. Anything the AI reads is sent to that AI provider, so keep that in mind for sensitive pages.
Where Valta fits
Valta is a vault of Markdown notes with its own MCP server, made for the job Notion wasn’t built for: being the memory every AI you use reads from and writes to. Say “save this” in Claude, and ask for it in ChatGPT the next day. No AI runs inside Valta; your own assistant does the writing, and Valta stores, searches, links and shows the notes as a graph.
Free gives you one vault and up to 100 notes. Pro starts with a 14-day free trial, then $9 a month (or $90 a year) for up to 5 vaults and version history; cancel before the trial ends and you pay nothing. Prices are on the pricing section. Export is free on every plan. Create your free vault and connect it next to Notion to see which one your AI reaches for.
