How to Share Memory Between Claude and ChatGPT

Valta · · 4 min read

Claude and ChatGPT can’t share memory directly: each keeps its own, tied to its own account, and neither exports to the other. To share memory between them, keep your notes in one place both can read and write, such as a vault connected to each over MCP (Model Context Protocol). Then a plan you save in Claude on Tuesday is there when ChatGPT drafts from it on Wednesday.

If you use more than one AI, you already know the problem. You spend an hour in Claude working out a launch plan, then open ChatGPT the next day and it knows nothing. You paste, you summarize, you re-explain. The context lives in one chat history, and the other AI can’t see it.

Why your AIs don’t share memory

Each assistant keeps its memory inside its own product. ChatGPT’s memory is a short list of facts tied to your OpenAI account. Claude has projects and its own memory, tied to your Anthropic account. Neither one exports to the other, and neither is built to.

That makes sense for them. It doesn’t make sense for you, if you pick the AI that’s best for the job in front of you.

The usual workarounds

Most people end up with one of these:

  • Copy and paste. Fast for one fact, painful for a plan with ten decisions. You also lose why a decision was made, so the next AI suggests the idea you already rejected.
  • A summary document. Better, but you are now the one who keeps it current. It goes stale the first busy week.
  • Exporting chat history. The export is huge and raw. No assistant can read a full history file in one go, and most of it is noise.

All three have the same flaw: you are the glue. Every handoff between AIs goes through you.

Approach Keeps the why behind decisions Stays current on its own Both AIs can write to it
Copy and paste No No No
Summary document Partly No, you update it No
Exported chat history Buried in noise No No
Built-in memory in each AI No, short facts only Yes, but only inside that AI No
A shared vault over MCP Yes, as notes with links Yes, the AIs save to it Yes

One place both AIs read and write

The fix is to stop keeping memory inside any one AI. Keep it in a place every AI can reach, and let them do the reading and writing.

That is what MCP (Model Context Protocol) is for. It lets an assistant use outside tools the same way it searches the web. Claude supports it, ChatGPT supports it through connectors, and so do Cursor, VS Code and a growing list of others.

Valta is an MCP server built for this one job. It is a vault of Markdown notes. Connect it to Claude and to ChatGPT, and both can:

  • Save an idea, a decision or a reference as a note.
  • Search your notes before answering from memory.
  • Read a note, with the notes it links to and the ones that link back.
  • Pick up what you were doing in the other AI, from the most recent notes.

So you save the launch plan in Claude on Tuesday. On Wednesday you ask ChatGPT to draft the email, and it searches the vault, reads the plan and writes from it.

Why notes beat a memory list

A memory list is a handful of loose facts. Notes have titles, bodies, tags and links between them. When your AI saves a note, Valta hands back the notes it relates to, and the AI writes the [[links]]. Over a few weeks that turns into a graph of how your ideas connect, which you can open on the web.

The notes are plain Markdown, the same format Obsidian uses, so you can export them whenever you want. Nothing is locked inside Valta either.

Setting it up

You connect each AI once. Claude (Settings → Connectors) and ChatGPT (Plugins) sign in to Valta; editors like Cursor use a key. The setup guide walks through each one. After that, you talk to your AIs the way you always do, and they share one memory.

FAQ

Does ChatGPT’s memory sync with Claude’s?

No. ChatGPT’s memory lives in your OpenAI account and Claude’s in your Anthropic account. Neither product reads the other’s, so anything you want both to know has to live somewhere outside them.

What is MCP?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets an AI assistant call outside tools, such as a notes vault, the way it searches the web. What is MCP explains it in plain words.

Can I use the same notes in Cursor or VS Code?

Yes. Any assistant that supports MCP can connect to the same vault. Editors like Cursor connect with a key instead of a sign-in.

Do I lose my notes if I stop using Valta?

No. Every vault exports as a zip of Markdown files with the [[links]] intact, on every plan, Free included.

One vault for every AI you use.
