Best Note Taking App for AI: What to Look For in 2026

Valta · · 6 min read

The best note taking app for AI is one your assistant can read and write without you pasting anything. Look for Markdown notes, an MCP connection, and links between notes.

Which app wins depends on one choice: do you want the AI inside the app, or the notes inside your AI?

What makes a note taking app good for AI?

Most “AI note apps” bolt a chat box onto an editor. That helps inside the app, but it does nothing when you’re working in Claude or ChatGPT and need your notes there. Five things matter more than the chat box.

  1. Format. Markdown is text any model reads well. Proprietary block formats have to be converted first, and something gets lost each time.
  2. Access from your AI. Your assistant should reach the notes directly, and today that usually means an MCP server. If you want the background, our connection guide shows what the setup looks like.
  3. Write access. Reading is half the job. The app is far more useful when your AI can also save a decision or an idea the moment it comes up.
  4. Links. Notes that point to each other give the AI a path to related context. A pile of unlinked notes forces it to guess.
  5. Exit. If you leave the app, your notes should leave with you in a format you can open elsewhere.

Which note apps work best with AI assistants?

Here is how the common options compare on those five points. Prices and features change, so check each vendor’s page before you commit.

Option Note format AI can read it AI can write to it Links between notes Leaving
Obsidian Markdown files in a local folder Through community plugins or a local MCP setup Same, depends on your setup Yes, [[wikilinks]] and backlinks Files are already yours
Notion Notion blocks Notion AI, plus Notion’s hosted MCP server Yes, through MCP Page links and relations Workspace export to Markdown, HTML, CSV
A folder of Markdown files Markdown Only if you run a local MCP server or paste files Same Only if you write them Nothing to export
Valta Markdown with frontmatter Built-in MCP server for Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and others Yes, save, link and move Yes, the AI writes [[links]] Zip of Markdown, every plan

Obsidian

Obsidian stores your notes as Markdown files in a local folder it calls a vault. That makes it a strong base for AI: the files are plain text, the links are plain text, and nothing locks you in. The core app is free, and Sync costs extra if you want your vault on several devices.

The catch is reach. Because the notes live on your computer, a cloud assistant like ChatGPT on the web can’t see them unless you build a bridge. Desktop tools with MCP support can, if you’re comfortable setting up a local server.

Notion

Think of Notion as a workspace first and a note app second. Notion AI is included on the Business plan and is a trial on Free and Plus. Notion also runs a hosted MCP server that MCP clients can connect to after you sign in, so your AI can read and update pages you have access to.

It suits teams already living in Notion. Personal notes are a different job. A typical workspace also holds meeting notes, wikis and task boards, so your AI searches through a lot that isn’t notes.

Plain Markdown files

A folder of .md files is the most portable option there is. It’s also the most manual. No links get written unless you write them, and your AI only sees the files when you paste them or run something locally that serves them.

An MCP vault

The newest category is a hosted vault built to be the AI’s notebook. You connect it to each AI once, and they all save to and search the same notes. Valta is one of these, and we cover where it fits at the end.

Should the AI live inside your note app?

This is the real choice, and it’s worth deciding before you compare features.

AI inside the app means you open Notion or Obsidian and ask the built-in assistant about your notes. It works well if the app is where you spend your day.

Notes inside your AI means you stay in your AI chat or editor, and it reaches out to your notes when it needs them. This works better if you switch between AIs, or if most of your thinking already happens in a chat window. If that’s you, read how to share memory between Claude and ChatGPT without being the copy-paste glue.

Say you draft scripts in Claude and do research in ChatGPT. An in-app assistant can’t help with either, because you’re not in the app. A notebook both AIs can reach can.

What about the memory built into ChatGPT and Claude?

Both assistants now remember things about you. That memory is useful for preferences and small facts. It’s a poor home for real notes. Each product keeps its own memory, apart from the other, and you can’t link or export it the way you can with files. We compare the two in detail in Claude memory vs ChatGPT memory.

Think of built-in memory as what the AI knows about you, and notes as what you know about your work. You want both.

How to pick in ten minutes

Answer three questions:

  • Where do you work most? If it’s inside one app, pick the app with the best built-in AI. If it’s in AI chats, pick something your AIs connect to.
  • How many AIs do you use? One assistant can get by on its own memory. Two or more need a shared place.
  • Do you need to leave easily? If yes, insist on Markdown.

Then test with a real task. Save five notes, ask your AI a question that needs two of them, and see if it finds both. That test tells you more than any feature list. If you want a broader view of how notes and AI fit together, our post on personal knowledge management with AI goes deeper.

FAQ

Is Obsidian good for AI?

Yes, as a format. Obsidian notes are local Markdown files, which any model reads well. The limit is access: a cloud assistant can’t reach a folder on your laptop without a plugin or local server you set up yourself.

Does Notion AI work with ChatGPT or Claude?

Notion AI is Notion’s own assistant inside Notion. Separately, Notion offers a hosted MCP server that MCP clients can connect to, which lets an outside AI read and update your pages.

What is the best free note taking app for AI?

Obsidian is free and stores plain Markdown, which makes it a solid free base. Valta also has a free plan with one vault and up to 100 notes, connected to your AIs over MCP.

Do I need a note app if ChatGPT has memory?

If you only want it to remember your name and preferences, no. If you want it to work from your plans, research and drafts, yes. Built-in memory holds short facts, not documents you can organize and export.

Where Valta fits

Valta is a hosted vault of Markdown notes with an MCP server. Any MCP client connects to it, Claude and ChatGPT included, and they all work from the same notes. No AI runs on Valta’s side: your AI does the writing, and when it saves a note, Valta returns related notes so the AI can write the [[links]]. On the web you see the graph and each note’s version history, and you can export any vault as Markdown that opens in Obsidian.

It’s the right pick if your notes need to live where your AIs are, not in one more app you have to open. The free plan covers one vault and 100 notes. Create your vault.

One vault for every AI you use.
