Gemini Memory vs ChatGPT: How Each One Remembers You

Valta · · 5 min read

Gemini and ChatGPT remember you in similar ways. Both let you save facts on purpose, both can draw on your past chats, and both have a temporary chat mode that skips memory. The differences are mostly in naming and defaults. Neither one shares what it knows with the other.

If you use both, that last point matters most. Teach Gemini your preferences and ChatGPT still starts from zero, and the reverse is just as true.

How does Gemini memory work?

Gemini has two layers, both under Personal context in the settings.

Saved info. Details about your work and preferences that you ask Gemini to keep. Per Google’s help page, you can add them at gemini.google.com/saved-info or from Settings & help > Personal context, or ask Gemini to remember something mid-chat. You can edit or delete them in the same place. Google notes that saving info isn’t available to users under 18.

Past chats. Gemini can also learn from earlier conversations. When Google introduced this in August 2025, 9to5Google reported that the toggle is labeled “Your past chats with Gemini” and is on by default. The rollout started in select countries, and Google’s help page says the mobile app is getting it gradually, so your account may not show it yet.

How does ChatGPT memory work?

ChatGPT also has two layers. Per OpenAI’s Memory FAQ:

Saved memories. Details you ask ChatGPT to remember, or that it decides to store. You can review and delete them under Settings > Personalization, in the memory controls.

Reference chat history. ChatGPT can draw on past conversations to shape answers. OpenAI notes it doesn’t remember every detail from past chats, so anything you always want it to know belongs in saved memories.

OpenAI says the controls vary by plan and region, so your menu labels may differ. One detail worth knowing: turning memory off doesn’t delete what’s already saved, and deleting a chat doesn’t remove a memory created from it. You remove both separately.

Gemini memory vs ChatGPT memory: what’s the difference?

Here’s the side-by-side, based on each company’s documentation and launch coverage. Features roll out unevenly, so check your own settings.

Gemini ChatGPT
Facts you save on purpose Saved info Saved memories
Learning from past chats “Your past chats with Gemini” toggle Reference chat history
Where the settings live Settings & help > Personal context Settings > Personalization
Ask it to remember mid-chat Yes Yes
Temporary chats Yes, not used for personalization Yes, don’t use or create memories
Shares memory with other AIs No No

On paper they line up feature for feature. The practical difference is which app you already open every day.

What are temporary chats, and how do they compare?

Both apps have a mode for chats you don’t want remembered.

In Gemini, Temporary Chat conversations don’t appear in your history and aren’t used to personalize Gemini or to train Google’s models. Google keeps them for up to 72 hours to respond and handle feedback.

In ChatGPT, OpenAI’s FAQ says Temporary Chats don’t use existing memories and don’t create new ones.

Use them for one-off questions that would otherwise clutter your memory, like a gift idea for someone or a topic you’ll never return to.

Which one remembers better?

Neither is clearly better at remembering, and the question hides a bigger issue: both memories are short and locked to their own app. They hold a set of facts and impressions, not the full detail of your work. ChatGPT’s saved memories also have a limit, which is why people search for ChatGPT memory full.

A useful way to decide:

  • Pick the one you open most. Memory only helps in the app where it lives.
  • Keep automatic memory for small preferences. Your name, your role, “keep answers short.”
  • Don’t rely on it for project knowledge. Brand guides and client decisions need a fuller home that you can edit.

Can Gemini and ChatGPT share memory?

Each company keeps memory inside its own app, and there’s no setting to sync the two. Your options:

Approach Effort What carries over
Re-teach each app Repeated Whatever you remember to say
Paste a profile note into each Some, every time What’s in the note
Export and summarize old chats Once, then stale A snapshot
A notes source both can reach One setup Everything you save, kept current

A profile note is the quick fix. Write a short Markdown note with your role and current projects, and paste it at the start of a chat in either app. It costs a bit of context window, but you control it. If your history is locked in ChatGPT, exporting your ChatGPT conversations explains how to pull out the parts worth keeping.

The more durable fix is a notes source each AI can connect to. That works through MCP, the Model Context Protocol. ChatGPT supports custom connectors for MCP servers. On Google’s side, the Gemini CLI supports MCP servers; check whether the Gemini surface you use does too.

FAQ

Does Gemini remember previous conversations?

It can, if the past chats setting is on and available in your country. Saved info is separate and holds facts you asked it to keep.

Can I turn off memory in Gemini and ChatGPT?

Yes. Both have toggles in settings, and both offer temporary chats. In ChatGPT, turning memory off doesn’t delete existing memories; delete those separately.

Is my Gemini memory used in Gemini Live?

Google’s help page says saved info can’t be used in Gemini Live conversations.

Can I move my ChatGPT memories to Gemini?

The dependable route is by hand. Open your saved memories in ChatGPT, copy the ones you want into Gemini’s saved info, or keep them in a note you give to both.

Where Valta fits

Valta is a hosted vault of Markdown notes with an MCP server, built for context you want in more than one AI. ChatGPT connects as a custom connector, and other MCP clients like Claude connect the same way. A note one AI saves is there for the others to search and read. When an AI saves a note, Valta returns related notes so it can add [[links]]. Valta doesn’t run a model or sync with Gemini’s or ChatGPT’s built-in memory; it’s a separate place you and your AI control. Any vault exports as a zip of Markdown.

The setup is in sharing memory between Claude and ChatGPT, and you can start on the Free plan.

One vault for every AI you use.
